It is one of the Turkic languages. It is spoken in the Republic of Bashkortostan (1,100 km east of Moscow, capital Ufa) in the Russian Federation. Since the Bashkirs call themselves Bashkort, it can also be called Bashkort. There are about 1 million speakers (1989). The total number of Bashkirs is 1.44 million (1989), but the retention rate of their mother tongue is low at 72.3% (1989), in contrast to the retention rate of most other Turkic peoples, which is over 90%. It belongs to the Western branch of the Turkic language family, and is closely related to Tatar in terms of phonological characteristics. It was written in Arabic characters, but after Latinization in 1929, it has adopted an orthography based on the Cyrillic alphabet since 1939. However, the Latinization is in progress.
