A play by American playwright EG O'Neill. It premiered in 1924. Set in mid-19th century New England, it is a frank portrayal of the sexual and material conflicts between an old farmer, his son, and the young wife he has just taken. It has been criticized for its shocking subject matter, including an adulterous affair between the young wife and son, and the young wife giving birth and killing an infant. The huge elm tree that stands in the way of the stage symbolizes the atmosphere of the entire work. [Kishi Tetsuo] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
