Born: May 17, 1918, West Karup [Died] December 25, 2005. Westkarup Swedish soprano. Real name Märta Birgit Svensson. She studied at the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm and made her debut in 1946 at the Royal Theatre in Stockholm, playing Agathe in Karl Weber's opera Der Freischütz. She appeared at the Glyndebourne Festival in 1951 and the Vienna State Opera in 1953. At the Bayreuth Festival in 1957, she was praised as the "incomparable Isolde" for her brilliant performance as Isolde in Richard Wagner's Tristan und Isolde. She made her debut at the Covent Garden Theatre in London in the same year, at La Scala in Milan in 1958, and at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1959. She was known worldwide for her powerful and rich singing voice, playing the heroine of Wagner's opera.
