<br /> An ancient tomb in Kamitsu-machi, Kurume City, Fukuoka Prefecture. It is located on a small hill commonly called Chabozuyama, which is derived from Mt. Myojo and Mt. Tobidake at the western end of the Mino Mountains that border the southern Chikugo Plain. It is a scallop-shaped tomb with a total length of 60m, believed to have been built in the late 5th century. The top of the hill forms a raised circular mound, and inside there is a horizontal stone chamber facing northwest. Inside the stone chamber is a large house-shaped stone coffin made of a tuff lid and body. The lid has a four-pillar roof shape with two protrusions on each side, and the body has a complex structure with a window on the front wall, with stone pillars on either side and the stones supported by latches . The inside of the tomb is engraved with decorative patterns, with the upper and lower sections of the side and back walls having straight arc pattern bands, and the middle section having double circular pattern bands, with traces of vermilion remaining in some areas. Simple straight arc patterns are also engraved on the inside and outside of the front wall. Excavated items include magatama (comma-shaped jewels ), gold rings, swords, and armor. This tomb was designated a national historic site in 1951 (Showa 26) due to the unique structure of the stone coffin and the patterns on the inside, making it highly valued as an ornamental tomb. Take the Nishitetsu bus from Kurume Station on the JR Kyushu Shinkansen or other lines to Nikenchaya stop, and walk for about 5 minutes. Source: Kodansha National Historic Site Guide Information |
