English composer. He was taught music by his father, an organist at the church in Broadhill (near Worcester), but he was mostly self-taught in composition. He started out as a local musician, but then began his career as a composer, establishing himself with works such as the orchestral piece Enigma Variations (1899) and the oratorio The Dream of Gerontius (1900). The latter in particular was praised by Richard Strauss, and his name became known on the European continent. Elgar's forte was in oratorios and cantatas that used choruses, but he also showed his talent in orchestral works such as symphonies and concertos. His music was influenced by late Romantic composers such as Wagner and Brahms, but it exalted noble human emotions with familiar melodies and skilled craftsmanship, and is highly regarded by the British people and loved all over the world. He is particularly known for his Pomp and Circumstance marches (of the five, the first of which is the most famous, having been used at the Coronation of Edward VII in 1902).
