This is the masterpiece by Danish author Jacobsen, published in 1880. He began writing it during a dark period of poor health while traveling in southern Europe, and completed it as a book to take stock of his own life. Throughout the life of the protagonist Niels, he explores three major themes: the idea of freedom, dreams, and love. While acknowledging the fact that the loneliness of the soul in a life without God or women is a great tragedy, he also explains how difficult it is to live with thoroughly free-thinking ideas. It is considered a masterpiece that deals with atheism, and has many avid readers abroad. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
