Coming of Age Soga

Japanese: 元服曾我 - げんぶくそが

(1) The title of a piece from the Kowaka dance. It is classified as a Soga piece. The date of its creation is unknown. Hakoo, a young boy from Hakone Gongen, secretly tries to find out the face of Kudo Suketsune, his father's enemy who accompanied Minamoto no Yoritomo, but Suketsune notices him and gives him a precious small knife. Later, his elder brother Soga Juro Sukenari climbs Hakone to meet his younger brother Hakoo before he shaves his head. The brothers confirm their firm determination to avenge their father, and descend Hakone together to have their coming-of-age ceremony with Hojo Tokimasa as their eboshi parent. Like other Soga pieces from the Kowaka dance, the content is close to the kanahon Soga Monogatari, but there are some parts, such as the scene where the brothers meet, that seem to be closer to the description in the manahon.

(1)幸若舞曲の曲名。曾我物に分類される。成立年時不詳。箱根権現の稚児であった箱王は，源頼朝に随行した親の敵，工藤祐経（すけつね）の面体をひそかに知ろうとするが，かえって祐経に気づかれ，重代の小刀を与えられる。その後，兄の曾我十郎祐成は，弟箱王の剃髪の前に会っておこうと箱根に登る。そのとき，兄弟は敵討への固い決意を確かめ合い，共に箱根を下り，北条時政を烏帽子（えぼし）親として元服する。幸若舞曲の他の曾我物同様，仮名本《曾我物語》に近い内容であるが，兄弟対面の場面などに，真名本の描写に近いと思われるところもある。
