[Died] August 8, 2010. Edgartown, Massachusetts. American film actress. Full name Patsy Louise Neal. She studied drama at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, and moved to New York in 1946 after receiving a role. The following year, she became a trainee at the Actors Studio, and won a Tony Award for her performance in "Another Part of the Forest" (1947). In 1948, she signed a contract with Warner Brothers. In her second film, The Fountainhead (1949), she established herself as an intelligent and sophisticated actress, and at the same time met Gary Cooper, who played the lead role. She later confessed in her autobiography that Cooper was the love of her life. However, her relationship with Cooper ended soon after their co-starring, and in 1953 she married the popular author Roald Dahl (divorced in 1983). She won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her most famous work, Hud (1963). In 1965, she suffered several severe strokes that left her with right-sided paralysis and speech impediments, but after intensive rehabilitation she miraculously recovered in less than two years. In her comeback film, "The Subject Was Roses" (1968), she delivered a dignified performance that dispelled doubts about her chances of recovery, and was again nominated for an Academy Award.

[died]July 20, 1984. An Anglican theologian and leader of the ecumenical movement. He studied at Cambridge University and served as a missionary in India for 20 years (1924-44). He was Bishop of Tinweli (38-44). He led evangelical mission work in Britain, Canada and the United States (47-50) and pioneered the new field of missionary theology in the 20th century. He co-edited "History of the Ecumenical Movement" (54). In 1962 he became professor of evangelism and ecumenics at the University of Hamburg, and later professor of philosophy and religious studies at the University of Nairobi in Kenya. His main works are "Christian Faith Today" (55), "The Unfinished Task" (57), "Anglicanism" (58) and "A History of Christian Missions" (64).

Backed by an understanding of children based on psychoanalysis, he advocated liberal education that thoroughly respects the needs of children. He first put his ideas into practice in Germany and then Austria, and then founded Summerhill School in England in 1921. His main work is The Problem Child (1953).

King of Ireland (reigned 377?-405). He was a chieftain in the western part of Connaught, and also had influence in the northern part of Ulster. He was nicknamed "King Neill of the Nine Hostages" because he ruled by taking many hostages. His descendants were called Ui Neill (Descendants of Neill), and they held the title of Ard Rhee (High King) until the early 11th century.

Aiming to build a self-sufficient society to resolve labor-management disputes, he founded a few co-operatives, though with little success. He promoted the 1869 Co-operative Annual Conference. He published many pamphlets on the co-operative movement.

British diplomat. Resident in Japan during the late Edo period. A former army officer, he was appointed secretary on April 29, 1862. He served as charge d'affaires during the return of envoy JR Alcock to Japan. He was attacked by Matsumoto samurai guarding the legation at Tozenji (→Tozenji Incident), and also played an active role in handling the Namamugi Incident.

イギリスの外交官。幕末，日本に駐在した。もと陸軍軍人で，文久2 (1862) 年4月 29日書記官として着任。公使 J.R.オールコックの帰国中は代理公使となった。東禅寺の公使館で警備の松本藩士の襲撃にあい (→東禅寺事件 ) ，また生麦事件の処理に尽力した。
