Reed hand painting - Ashidee

Japanese: 葦手絵 - あしでえ

A style of painting popular during the Heian period, in which waterside scenery is depicted with flowing water, reeds, waterfowl, rocks, and pine trees, with pictorial characters arranged on top. Some, such as ashide uta-e, combine drawn designs and characters to express the meaning of a waka poem, while others use the characters of sutras to show the meaning of the sutra. Many were used decoratively as sketches for paper, especially for poem scrolls and sutra scrolls. Representative examples include the sketches for the Nishi Honganji Hongen Shinshu from the early 12th century and the sketches for Wakan Roeishu by Fujiwara no Koreyuki from 1160.

平安時代に行われた画風で，水辺の風景に擬して水流，葦，水鳥，岩，松などを描き，そこに絵画化した文字を配した絵。描かれた図様と文字を組合せて和歌の歌意を表わす葦手歌絵や，経文の文字を配して経意を示すものもある。多くは料紙の下絵として特に歌巻や経巻に装飾的に用いられた。代表的作例は 12世紀初めの『西本願寺本元真集』下絵や永暦1 (1160) 年の藤原伊行筆『和漢朗詠集』下絵など。
