Oominoga - Oominoga

Japanese:
Oominoga - Oominoga

A moth belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Psychidae. Its wing span is about 35 mm. Its body is brown with a blackish tinge, and the outer edge of its forewings has two thin, transparent stripes. It is the largest species in Japan among the Psychidae, and the raincoat made by its larvae reaches 40-50 mm when it matures. The raincoat is spindle-shaped with twigs around it, making it extremely strong. The male emerges in June and mates with the female that has emerged inside the raincoat. The female lays eggs inside the raincoat and dies, so she never leaves the raincoat. The larvae hatch in July or August, mature in October, and overwinter hanging from the twigs, but the following spring they pupate with their upper part closed without eating. The larvae are extremely polyphagous, feeding on the leaves of various trees. They are found in areas from Honshu to the Ryukyu Islands, and are often found in gardens, roadside trees, and orchards, but do not invade forested areas. When they become widespread, they can cause considerable damage. People sometimes use raincoats to spread out and remove twigs and dead leaves, then sew several of them together to make small items such as paper cases.
