Tailcoat - Enbifuku

Japanese:
Tailcoat - Enbifuku

The first formal attire worn by men for evening parties. It is a direct translation of the English swallow tailed coat, and was established in its current form in the mid-19th century. The front part is waist-length, but the back part covers the hips and hangs down to the back of the knees, splitting in two at the hem. The name comes from the fact that its shape resembles a swallow. It is made of black or navy blue doeskin, cashmere, or other fabric, and is combined with trousers made of the same fabric with two braids attached to the side seams. The vest is white pique or silk, single or double-breasted. The shirt has a white linen chest decoration that is tightly starched, and a folded up collar. Accessories include a white tie, white kid or mocha gloves, a white handkerchief, and black patent leather shoes. If a hat is worn, a top hat or an opera hat is the formal choice. Recently, the trend has been to use tuxedos (semi-formal suits) as formal attire, and tailcoats are now reserved for special occasions. Tailcoats worn by waiters and other professionals come in a variety of colors and materials. In English, they are called tail coats, dress coats, evening frocks, and night full dresses, while in French they are called habit de soirée, habit à queue, and habit noir.
