Great King - Daio
[1] 〘Noun〙① A title of respect for a king. ※Daian-ji Garan Engi and Ryuuki Zaizaicho (Records of the Great King's Temple) - Tenpyo 19 (747) "By command, this temple has been passed down without interruption throughout the reign of the distant ancestor, the great king, and the successive emperors of Japan." ※Saikoku Risshi (1870-71) (translated by Nakamura Masanao) 3 "The great king often declared that he had pity on his servants." 〔Records of the Grand Historian - Fan Kuai Biography〕② A title of a prince. ※Genji (c. 1001-14) Akashi "Whenever I was in a hurry, I would behave as if I was a servant, but I was suspicious, and it was the servants who imitated him who naturally served the great king."③ An abbreviation of "Daiou no Miya" (Great King's Palace). One theory is that it is a mistake for "Dahiou" (Great Empress). ※Takamura Monogatari (late 12th century) “For a woman, the king, but for an emperor, who is the king?” [2] This refers to King Enma . ※Setsugekka-Aigo no Waka (Yamamoto Kyubei version) (1661) 4 “Oh, my dear, I am sorry for your suffering. Is it your own fault for being lost in the sins of your children?”
