Ichihara [city] - Ichihara
A city in central Chiba Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1963. It is the largest metropolis in the prefecture, consisting of the lowlands of the Yoro River basin, the Shimousa Plateau, and reclaimed land on the Tokyo Bay coast. It was one of the centers of the ancient Kazusa culture, and the provincial capital and Kokubunji temple were located there. Urban areas developed in the port town of Yawata, the post towns of Goi and Anesaki on the Kisarazu Kaido, and inland Ushiku (formerly Nanso Town), and are connected by the Ken-O Expressway, Uchibo Line, and Kominato Railway. The inland area is an agricultural region, producing peaches, pears, and seedless watermelons in abundance. Reclamation of the Tokyo Bay coast has progressed since the 1950s, and heavy industries such as electric power and electrical equipment, which are the core of the Keiyo Industrial Area, as well as petrochemical complexes, and more recently precision machinery industries, have been established here, making it the number one industrial city in the prefecture, with a manufacturing shipment value of 3,178.8 billion yen (2003), accounting for 29% of the prefecture's total. Behind the city are large housing complexes that have been built since the 1960s. Close to the city center, the Yoro Valley, which is popular throughout the year, and the many golf courses attract many tourists. The city suffered damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. 368.17 km2 . 280,416 people (2010).
