A creeping perennial plant of the Santalum family cultivated for medicinal purposes (illustration). Although its specific name is japonica (Japanese), it is native to China (Zhejiang, Jiangsu, and Anhui provinces) and does not grow wild in Japan. Its Chinese name is Baibu. The upper part of the stem becomes creeping and wraps around other things, reaching a height of about 2m. The leaves grow in whorls of 3 to 4, are ovate-elliptical, slightly pointed at the tip, and rounded at the base. They are thick and have five prominent parallel veins. 薬用に栽培されるビャクブ科のつる性の多年草(イラスト)。種小名はjaponica(日本の)と名付けられているが,中国(浙江省,江蘇省,安徽省)の原産で,日本に野生はない。中国名は百部。茎は上部がつる性となり,他のものに巻きついて高さ約2mに及ぶ。葉は3~4枚ずつ輪生し,卵状楕円形,先端はやや尾状にとがり,基部は円い。質厚く5平行脈が目だつ。葉身は4.5~6cmで,3~4cmの細長い葉柄がある。花は7月ごろ,葉腋(ようえき)に1~2個ずつつく。
