Shinju - Shinju

Japanese: シンジュ - しんじゅ
Shinju - Shinju

A deciduous tall tree of the family Spiraeae (APG classification: Spiraeae). It is also called Ailanthus jasmine (garden lacquer). It grows to a height of 10-20 meters. The leaves are alternate, large, pinnate, and compound, 40-70 cm long. There are 6-12 pairs of leaflets, which are egg-shaped, oblong, 5-13 cm long, sharply pointed at the tip, and have one or two pairs of serrated teeth at the base, which are not the same on either side. The tip of the teeth is a large glandular body. Dioecious. In June, the panicles, 20-30 cm long, grow at the end of the branches, and many small greenish-white flowers, each about 8 mm in diameter, bloom. The petals are five oblong, lanceolate, and densely covered with white hairs at the base. The male flowers have ten stamens, and the female flowers have an ovary with five carpels. The fruit is a samara, lanceolate, 4-5 cm long, with a seed in the center of a thin wing. Native to north-central China, it was introduced to Japan around 1877 (Meiji 10). Its name is based on the German name Götterbaum (meaning divine tree). Its English name is tree of heaven. It grows quickly and is widely planted as a garden tree or roadside tree. It is propagated by seedlings or by dividing new seedlings that sprout from the roots.
