Husband of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom. Born in Rosenau Castle as the second son of the Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha in Germany. Studied in Belgium and Bonn. He and Victoria were cousins, and married in 1840 with the help of their uncle, King Leopold I of Belgium. At first, he was shunned by the foreign-hating British political circles and upper classes, and it was not until 17 years after their marriage that he was given the title of "Prince Consort of the Queen." During this time, he educated the Queen, who was often involved in politics and had strong likes and dislikes for politicians, by teaching her how to be a constitutional monarch. The first World's Fair was held in London in 1851, largely due to his enthusiastic efforts. The happy and healthy family life centered around the Queen and her husband was reported in the newspapers, which were developing at the time, and they came to be looked up to as a model for the middle class. In 1861, he went to Cambridge to admonish the Crown Prince for a love affair, but he suddenly died of typhoid fever. The Queen, deeply saddened by his death, retired to seclusion under the pretense of mourning. The current Hyde Park in London and the Prince Albert Memorial and Albert Hall opposite were built in his memory with surplus funds from the Great Exhibition. →Victorian era

英国，ビクトリア女王の夫。ドイツのザクセン・コーブルク・ゴータ公の次男としてロゼナウ城に生まれる。ベルギーとボンで学ぶ。ビクトリアとはいとこの関係にあり，双方の伯父のベルギー国王レオポルド１世の仲立ちで1840年結婚にいたった。当初は外国人嫌いの英国の政界・上流階級に疎(うと)んじられ，〈女王の夫君Prince Consort〉の称号を得たのも，結婚後17年も経ってからのことであった。この間，とかく政治に嘴(くちばし)を入れ，政治家の好き嫌いがはなはだしかった女王に対して，立憲君主としてのありかたを教えて教育にあたった。世界で最初の万国博覧会が1851年にロンドンで開かれたのも，彼の熱心な働きかけが大きかった。女王夫妻を中心にする幸福で健全な家庭生活は，おりから発展しつつあった新聞を通じて報道され，中流階級の模範と仰がれるようになった。1861年恋愛事件を起こした皇太子を諌(いさ)めるためにケンブリッジに赴き，腸チフスに罹(かか)って急死。深く死を悼(いた)んだ女王は喪に服すと称して引きこもってしまった。現在ロンドンのハイド・パークとその向かいにあるアルバート公記念碑とアルバート・ホールは，彼を記念して万国博覧会の剰余金で建てられたもの。→ビクトリア時代
