...Rope ropes, including shimenawa and yokozuna ropes, are used as markers to indicate the boundary between inside and outside and sacred areas, and to keep out impurity and filth. During the New Year, there is an event called the "Tsunagake Festival," where large ropes are hung at the entrances and boundaries of villages to prevent epidemics and disasters from entering the village, and to pray for peace in the village for the year. In Nara, these ropes are called "kanjozuna," and are made to look like snakes or male and female genitals, or two ropes, one male and one female, to expel evil. Snake-shaped ropes are also pulled around the village, and evil spirits are entrusted to them and thrown into the river, sea, or village border, and ropes are also used in events where tug-of-war is used to predict the will of the gods and the harvest....
