1831‐97 American railroad sleeper manufacturer. After working in furniture manufacturing and civil engineering contracting in his youth, he began manufacturing sleeping cars and founded the Pullman Sleeping Car Company in 1867. The business was successful, and the company built factories in several locations across the United States, expanded into dining cars and observation cars, and monopolized the sleeper car business throughout the United States by running its cars on the lines of various railroad companies. In protest of wage cuts during the depression of 1893, a strike began in Pullman, a company town south of Chicago, the following year. Supported by the American Railroad Union led by EV Debs, the strike became a major railroad strike centered in Chicago, and federal troops were sent to put down the strike.
