American railroad sleeper manufacturer. After working in furniture manufacturing and civil engineering contracting in his youth, he began manufacturing sleeping cars and founded the Pullman Sleeping Car Company in 1867. The business was successful, and the company built factories in several locations across the United States, expanded into dining cars and observation cars, and monopolized the sleeper car business throughout the United States by running its cars on the lines of various railroad companies. In protest of wage cuts during the depression of 1893, a strike began in Pullman, a company town south of Chicago, the following year. Supported by the American Railroad Union led by EV Debs, the strike became a major railroad strike centered in Chicago, and federal troops were sent to put down the strike.

アメリカの鉄道寝台業者。若いころ家具製造業や土木請負業に従事したのち，寝台車の製造を始め，1867年にプルマン寝台会社を設立した。事業は成功して，全米数ヵ所に工場を建て，食堂車，展望車にも手を広げ，車両を各鉄道会社の路線に乗り入れる形で，全米の寝台車事業を独占するにいたった。93年の恐慌下の賃金削減に抗議して，翌年シカゴ南方の企業町プルマンでストライキが始まり，E.V.デブスが率いるアメリカ鉄道組合が支援したため，シカゴを中心とする大鉄道ストライキとなり，その鎮圧のために連邦軍が派遣された。
