Gionji Temple

Located in Kosaka-cho, Toriimoto, Saga, Ukyo-ku, Kyoto City, this nunnery belongs to the Daikaku-ji school of the Shingon sect. It is located within the grounds of Ojo-in, which is said to have been founded by Ryochin, a disciple of Honen (Genku), and once covered a large area, but gradually fell into disrepair and remained as a modest nunnery. It later came to be called Gion-ji Temple, after Gion, a Shirabyōshi who became a nun after losing the favor of Taira no Kiyomori, her sister Gion, and her mother Toji took refuge there. In 1895 (Meiji 28), the Governor of Kyoto Prefecture donated a villa in Saga, and the current Gio-ji Temple was rebuilt by volunteers from Saga, including Tomioka Tessai and Daikakuji Temple's head priest, Kusunoki Gyokutai, as a temple associated with Gio. In the Buddhist altar room, wooden statues of the principal image, Dainichi Nyorai, are placed at the front, Kiyomori, Gio, and Toji on the left, and Gijo and Hotoke Gozen on the right. The Hokyointo pagoda in the temple's cemetery is the grave of Gio, Gijo, and Toji, and the Gorinto is a memorial tower for Taira no Kiyomori, all of which date back to the Kamakura period.

京都市右京区嵯峨(さが)鳥居本(とりいもと)小坂町にあり、真言宗大覚寺派に属する尼寺。法然(ほうねん)（源空）の門弟良鎮(りょうちん)によって始められたと伝えられる往生院(おうじょういん)の境内にあり、かつては広い地域を占めていたがしだいに荒廃してささやかな尼寺として残った。平清盛(きよもり)の寵(ちょう)を失い、尼となった白拍子(しらびょうし)祇王と、妹の祇女、母の刀自(とじ)らがこもったことにちなんで、のちに祇王寺とよばれるようになった。1895年（明治28）京都府知事が嵯峨にある別荘の一棟を寄付し、嵯峨の有志、富岡鉄斎(てっさい)、大覚寺門跡楠玉諦(くすのきぎょくたい)らによって、祇王ゆかりの寺として再建されたのが現在の祇王寺である。仏間には正面に本尊大日如来(にょらい)、左に清盛、祇王、刀自、右に祇女、仏御前(ほとけごぜん)の木像が安置されている。寺の墓地にある宝篋印塔(ほうきょういんとう)は、祇王、祇女、刀自の墓、五輪塔は平清盛の供養塔で、いずれも鎌倉時代のものである。
