Born: January 14, 1892 in Lippstadt
Died March 6, 1984. A Lutheran theologian from Wiesbaden, Germany. He served in the First World War and was a submarine captain. He studied theology at the University of Münster in Westphalia, and was involved in campus evangelism there from 1924 to 1930. From 1931 to 1939, he became a pastor at the Lutheran Church in Berlin-Dahlem. He was a leader in the resistance movement against Hitler's control of the church, calling for the formation of an emergency alliance of pastors, and was influential in forming the Confessing Church and in establishing the Barmen Declaration. He was arrested and sent to the Dachau concentration camp (1937). After being released after the Second World War, he devoted himself to the peace movement and the movement for German unification. He was a member of the Council of the Evangelical Church in Germany and Director of Foreign Affairs. He was a member of the World Council of Churches. His main works are Vom U-boot zur Kanzel (34), From U-boat to Pulpit, and Herr ist Jesus Christus (46), Jesus Christ Is Lord.

ドイツのルター派神学者。第1次世界大戦に従軍し,潜水艦長として活躍。ウェストファリアのミュンスター大学で神学を修め,1924~30年同大学学内伝道にたずさわり,31~39年ベルリン・ダーレムのルター派教会牧師となる。ヒトラーの教会支配に対する抵抗運動の指導者として活躍し,牧師緊急同盟の結成を呼びかけ,告白教会の形成,バルメン宣言の成立にあずかって力があったが,逮捕されて,ダハウの強制収容所に送られる (1937) 。第2次世界大戦後解放されて,平和運動,ドイツ統一運動に尽力。ドイツ福音主義教会評議員,同外務局長。世界教会協議会会員。主著『Uボートから講壇へ』 Vom U-boot zur Kanzel (34) ,『イエス・キリストは主なり』 Herr ist Jesus Christus (46) 。
