A perennial fern of the Dryopteris family (illustration), commonly found on the forest floor in the mountains throughout Japan, but especially in moist areas from the upper subtropical zone to the temperate zone. In northern regions, it is summer-green. The lowest pinnae develop and branch into pinnate shapes, giving the leaf surface a cross-like appearance, hence the Japanese name. The rhizome grows upright from an upward slant, with several leaves growing in clusters. The leaves are medium-sized, about 40 cm long, and are single-pinnate to bipinnate with mid-lobes except for the lowest pinnae. The scales are small and membranous, except for those at the base of the petiole, and are attached by pressure to the axis. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
