Meiwa [village] - Meiwa

Japanese: 明和[村] - めいわ
Meiwa [village] - Meiwa
A village in Oura County in southeastern Gunma Prefecture. Population 11,255 (1995). It is located in lowlands on the north bank of the Tone River, bordering Tatebayashi City to the north and Hanyu City, Saitama Prefecture, across the Tone River to the south. Kawamata flourished in the early modern period as a river port on the Tone River and a post town on the Nikko Kaido road, but fell into decline after the opening of the Tobu Isesaki Line. With the development of drainage works, it became a grain producing area, but because it is within 60 km of central Tokyo, it has switched to suburban agriculture, producing a lot of cucumbers, Chinese cabbage, tomatoes, etc. Cyclamens are also grown in greenhouses, and pears and grapes are also grown.
