A partial translation of the travelogue "Fregat Pallada" (1858) by the Russian author Goncharov. From 1852 to 1855 (Kaei 5 to Ansei 2), Goncharov participated in a voyage around the world as secretary to Admiral Putyatin, an envoy to Japan, and arrived in Nagasaki in 1853. This travelogue, which portrays Japan at the end of the Edo period in an ironic light from the perspective of a developed Western country, while also perceptively capturing the seeds of new Japanese power, has been translated into Japanese many times since the Meiji period and has become a valuable historical source in the history of Japan-Russia negotiations.
