Mount Tsurumi - Tsurumi-dake

A mountain in the west of Beppu City, Oita Prefecture. It is 1,375 meters above sea level. It is a bell-shaped volcano made of pyroxene-containing amphibole andesite. The Sandai Jitsuroku records a major eruption in 867 (Jogan 9). It is 1.8 kilometers from Beppu Kogen Station on the Beppu Ichinomiya Line, a major regional road, by ropeway and can be reached in 7 minutes and 30 seconds. From the summit, you can see mountains such as Yufu and Kuju to the west, Mt. Sobo and Mt. Katamuki to the south, and Mt. Hidehiko to the north, as well as the mountains of Chugoku and Shikoku across the Seto Inland Sea and Bungo Channel to the east. The Miyamakirishi flowers in early summer and the frost-covered trees in winter are beautiful. It is part of Aso Kuju National Park, and on the southeastern slope of the mountain is the Shikinaisha (shrine listed in the Engishiki), Honome Shrine. It is a two-hour walk from the torii gate (altitude 590 meters) along the Beppu Ichinomiya Line, a major prefectural road.

大分県別府市の西部にある山。標高1375メートル。含輝石角閃(かくせん)安山岩からなる鐘状火山。『三代実録』に、867年（貞観9）大爆発の記録がある。主要地方道別府一の宮線沿いの別府高原駅からロープウェーで山頂まで1.8キロメートル、7分30秒で達することができ、山頂からは、西に由布(ゆふ)・九重(くじゅう)、南に祖母(そぼ)山・傾(かたむき)山、北に英彦(ひこ)山などの山々、また東方は瀬戸内海・豊後(ぶんご)水道を隔てて、中国・四国の山々が望まれる。初夏のミヤマキリシマや冬の樹氷が美しい。阿蘇くじゅう国立公園(あそくじゅうこくりつこうえん)に含まれ、南東山腹には式内社の火男火売神社(ほのおほのめじんじゃ)がある。主要地方道別府一の宮線沿いの鳥居（標高590メートル）からは徒歩2時間。
