Year of death: Bunan 5.1.26 (1448.3.1)
Year of birth: Ōan 1/Shohei 23 (1368)
A Rinzai sect monk in the early Muromachi period. Born in Yamashiro (Kyoto Prefecture). His secular surname was Fujiwara. At the age of nine, he became a disciple of Muso Soseki at Hongen-an Temple in Tenryu-ji Temple under Gakuun Shuto, and after traveling to many places, he became a disciple of Muin Soin at Kaisei-ji Temple in Settsu (Nishinomiya City, Hyogo Prefecture). He accompanied Muin on his travels around the country and inherited his teachings. After Muin's death in 1410, he lived temporarily at several temples in Mino (Gifu Prefecture) and Owari (Aichi Prefecture) and read the Tripitaka scriptures. He later opened Zuisen-ji Temple in Inuyama, with Muin as its founder. Thirty years after it was confiscated by Ashikaga Yoshimitsu in the wake of the Ouchi Yoshihiro Rebellion, he took up residence at the Rinzai sect Myoshin-ji Temple in Kyoto in 1429, and rebuilt it with the support of Hosokawa Katsumoto. He is known as the founder of the Myoshin-ji Temple revival. In 1447, he became the first monk of the Kanzan school to reside at Daitokuji Temple, but died the following year. His posthumous name was Zengen Daisai Zenji.
