It is a slender perennial grass of the Poaceae family that grows under forests and in grasslands in mountainous regions. Its Japanese name is Ibuki Nukaho, which means Nukabo (branberry) from Mt. Ibuki in Shiga Prefecture, but it is more closely related to Suzume no Teppo (grass) than Nukabo (branberry) (illustration). It is bright green and soft overall. The stem is upright and unbranched, and is about 80 cm tall. The leaves are linear lanceolate, pale green, about 15 cm long, and 1.5 cm wide, with blunt tips. Towards summer, it produces sparse panicles about 15 cm long at the top of the stem, with thread-like branches that hang down in whorls around the central axis, and several spikelets at the tips.
