He was one of the free thinkers (known as the Six Heresies from the Buddhist perspective) of the 6th to 5th century BCE in ancient India, and preached a theory of negation of morality without metaphysics. His birth and death years are unknown. He was a contemporary of Shakyamuni and is said to have been born of slave origins. In Chinese translations of Buddhist scriptures, he is transliterated as Furankaśyapa. He believed that murder and theft are not evil deeds, and that giving alms and cultivating self-cultivation are not good deeds, and therefore there is no reward for either good or evil deeds. This conclusion is shared by several other free thinkers, but while they base their teachings on metaphysics, his theory is characterized by its lack of this aspect.
