A type of tableware used by monks for meals, consisting of a set of different sized nested bowls, chopsticks, spoons, etc. Also used for begging (walking around begging for rice or money). Originally a term used in the Soto sect, other sects have their own terms, but this is the commonly known term. ◇It is said to have been named after the bowls used, which were sized according to the amount of food to be put in them. Originally made of iron, black lacquerware came to be used as it was considered the same as iron, and today black lacquerware is more common. This is why it is sometimes called "iron bowl". It is also called "ouki". Source: Kodansha Dictionary of Tableware and Cookware Information |
