A small grass-like shrub of the Lamiaceae family (APG classification: Lamiaceae). It is found in sunny rocky areas, grasslands, and limestone areas of mountains, and occasionally near the coast. The stem spreads over the ground, roots in places, and the branches grow diagonally upwards, reaching a height of 3-15 cm. The leaves have very short stalks, grow opposite each other, are ovate or oblong, entire, and 5-10 mm long. There are 2-3 pairs of pinnate veins, and glandular dots on both sides. In June and July, it produces short inflorescences at the ends of the branches, and bears small, pale purple, lip-shaped flowers densely in several tiers. The calyx is 5-lobed and bi-lipped, and has many white hairs on the inner throat. The corolla is 7-8 mm long. It is distributed from Hokkaido to Kyushu, China, the Himalayas, etc. It has a pleasant fragrance that contains thymol throughout, and is named after the fact that it is found in abundance on Mt. Ibuki (Shiga Prefecture). It is sometimes grown as a potted mountain plant or used for medicinal purposes. There are about 200 species in the Thymus genus, which are distributed throughout Asia, Africa, and Europe. [Gen Murata August 20, 2021] The name was given because it is common on Mt. Ibuki (Shiga Prefecture).
