…He was a leading proponent of cultural Zionism. His real name was Asher Hirsch Ginsberg. He was born in the Kiev region of Russia, and in Odessa, under the pseudonym Ahad Ha'am, or "one of the people," he advocated the construction of Palestine as the spiritual and cultural center of the Jewish people, and was critical of the political Zionism of Herzl and others, who aimed to realize a Jewish state as a mere political organization.
