...Korda's focus on blockbusters eventually led to financial collapse, and with the start of World War II, Korda retreated to Hollywood. After that, J. Arthur Rank (1888-1972) monopolized 80% of British film production companies, including Denham Studios, which Korda had given up, 60% of distribution companies, and most of the film equipment. He enabled filmmakers who had grown up in the 1930s and 1940s to demonstrate their talents, and built an international reputation for "true British cinema." Under Rank's umbrella, nicknamed "King Arthur," seven "unit productions" stood like knights of the Round Table, and each produced distinctive works, such as the following:
