A Western-style painter from Nagasaki in the late Edo period. Born into a townsman's family, he was commonly known as Toyosuke, had the pen name Tanemi, and was also known by the pseudonym Chogetsu-ro-shu. Later he was known as Taguchi. His whereabouts after 1860, when he was 75 years old, are unknown. He learned painting from his father Kozan and Karae-meri Ishizaki Yushi, and was allowed to enter the Dutch trading post on Dejima from the latter half of the Bunka era (1804-1818) as a painter who was present at Dejima. His talent for painting was discovered by Siebold, who came to Japan as a doctor at the trading post in 1823, and in 1825 he was invited by Siebold to learn Western painting techniques from the painter de Villeneve. In addition to producing many sketches in response to Siebold's research on Japan, he also produced works such as the "Portrait of the Blomhoff Family" (owned by Kobe City Museum). He was charged with a crime in the Siebold Incident in 1828, and was banished from Nagasaki in 1842 when his works violated the national ban, but he later returned to the area.

江戸後期の長崎の洋風画家。町家の出で,通称登与助,字は種美,別号に聴月楼主人。のち田口氏。万延1(1860)年75歳以後の消息は不明。父香山と唐絵目利石崎融思に画を学び,出島出入絵師として文化年間(1804～18)後半ごろから出島のオランダ商館に出入りを許された。文政6(1823)年商館医として来日したシーボルトに画才を見出され,8年に彼が招いた画家ド・フィレネーフェに西洋画法を学んだ。シーボルトの日本研究に応じ多量の写生図を描いたほか,「ブロンホフ家族図」(神戸市立博物館蔵)などの作品がある。文政11年のシーボルト事件で罪に問われ,天保13(1842)年にも作品が国禁に触れ長崎から追放されたが,のち同地にもどった。
