An insect of the Lepidoptera family, Pyralidae (illustration). Wingspan is 1.9-3cm. Males are generally small and have dark forewings. The forewings are straw-colored with many thin black-brown stripes, and the hindwings are white. Individuals with black-brown forewings are also common. They are found throughout most of Japan, the Korean peninsula, China, Southeast Asia, and southern Europe. The larvae, along with planthoppers, are considered the most important pests of rice cultivation in Japan, and parasitize various grasses such as upland rice, corn, millet, cattails, and wild rice. Both the larvae and adults of those raised on wild rice are large, with a wingspan of up to 3.5cm. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
