Hypnea
A marine red alga of the family Porphyrae (illustration) found in oceans around the world except for cold seas. The body is cylindrical or flat, and the branches are often intertwined to form a mass. Most grow to a height of 10-20cm, but some species grow even larger. More than 10 species grow off the coast of Japan alone, and some of the more commonly seen species include H. charoides Lamour, H. saidana Holmes, H. variabilis Okamura, and H. japonica Tanaka.
