Biography: From an early age, he learned the Quran and classical Arabic poetry from his father. After graduating from the Department of Philosophy at Damascus University, he joined the illegal left-wing Syrian Social Nationalist Party and was arrested. After a year in prison, he fled to Beirut, Lebanon in 1956. It was around this time that he began writing poetry, and participated in the launch of the poetry magazine "Shi" in 1957, promoting the Tammuz literary movement in search of new Arab poetry. In 1969, he launched the cultural magazine "Tachiban" and later became editor-in-chief of the literary magazine "Jijyo". In 1980, he left Beirut during the civil war and went into exile in Paris. His main poetry collections include "Songs of Mikhayal of Damascus" (1962), "The Earth Spoke" and "Leaves of the Wind", and his poetry critiques include "The Age of Poetry" (1972). His name is mentioned almost every year as a candidate for the Nobel Prize in Literature. He is a Syrian citizen.
