Abbreviation for Augmented Reality. A technology that enhances human perception of reality by adding information created by digital synthesis to information perceived as it is.
Recently, attempts have begun to apply this technology to mobile devices such as smartphones. In other words, the technology displays real-world images through a camera, and adds location information obtained from GPS and other devices, as well as information on restaurants, landmarks, and other locations saved as a map. Using this technology, users can see where things are just by looking at the outside world through their mobile phone. A prime example is Sekai Camera, which runs on iPhone and Android. AR apps are booming on the iPhone App Store, and many AR apps created by various manufacturers and individual programmers are now on sale.
The history of the development of augmented reality technology began in the 20th century, with development particularly in the military, aviation, and medical fields. A typical example of a device that has been put into practical use so far is the head-mounted display worn by fighter pilots. In this case, various information is displayed on the visor of the helmet, and additional information such as the distance to the target and whether the target is detected by radar is transmitted to the pilot. As a result, the pilot can perceive reality in an enhanced form, enabling him or her to accurately destroy enemy aircraft.

Augmented Realityの略。ありのままに知覚される情報に、デジタル合成などによって作られた情報を付加し、人間の現実認識を強化する技術のこと。
最近ではスマートフォンなどの携帯デバイスにこの技術を応用しようという試みが始まっている。つまり、カメラなどを通して現実の映像を表示し、そこからGPSなどによって得られた位置情報と、マップとして保存されている飲食店やランドマークなどの情報を付加する、というものである。これを使うと、ユーザーは携帯電話を通して外界を眺めると、それだけでどこに何があるかを知ることができるようになる。iPhone、Android上で動作するセカイカメラなどがその代表。IPhoneのApp Store上ではARアプリがブームとなっており、各種のメーカーや個人プログラマーによって作られたARアプリが多数販売されるようになっている。
拡張現実の技術開発の歴史は、20世紀のうちから始まっており、特に軍事、航空、医療の分野での開発が先行していた。今までに実用化された機器の典型的な例としては、戦闘機パイロットが被るヘルメットのヘッドマウントディスプレイなどがあげられる。この場合、ヘルメットのバイザー部分に各種の情報が表示され、目標との距離や、目標がレーダーに捕らえられているかどうかなどの情報がパイロットに追加されて伝達される。その結果パイロットは現実を強化された形で認識し、敵機を正確に撃破することが可能になるのである。
