A French female writer. Her real name was Marguerite de Crayencour. She lost her Belgian mother at the age of one year and was raised by her father. From an early age, she traveled not only throughout Europe but also to Greece and the Middle East, acquiring a broad and deep classical education. Her first work was "Alexi, or On a Vain Battle" (1929). Before World War II, she published "Fire" (1936) and "The Final Blow" (1939), among others, but it was "Memoirs of Hadrian" (1951) that established her literary reputation worldwide.

フランスの女流作家。本名Marguerite de Crayencour。ベルギー人の母を当歳で失い，父に育てられた。幼時からヨーロッパ各地のみならず，ギリシアや中近東にまで旅し，広く深い古典的教養を身につけた。処女作は《アレクシ，あるいは空しい戦いについて》(1929)。第2次大戦前《火》(1936)，《とどめの一撃》(1939)などを発表したが，文名を世界的に確立したのは《ハドリアヌス帝の回想》(1951)である。
