1903‐87 A French female writer. Her real name was Marguerite de Crayencour. She lost her Belgian mother at the age of one year and was raised by her father. From an early age, she traveled not only throughout Europe but also to Greece and the Middle East, acquiring a broad and deep classical education. Her first work was "Alexi, or On a Vain Battle" (1929). Before World War II, she published "Fire" (1936) and "The Final Blow" (1939), among others, but it was "Memoirs of Hadrian" (1951) that established her literary reputation worldwide.
