King of the Warring States period in China. Son of Duke Xian. Reigned 361-338 BC. At the time, Qin was a backward country, so much so that it was treated as a barbarian by other countries. Duke Ying considered this humiliating, and in an attempt to expand the country's prestige, he sought talent from all over the world. In response, Gongsun Yang (later known as Shang Yang) came to Qin, and he trusted him to carry out large-scale reforms of national government. The reforms, which aimed to enrich the country and strengthen its military and establish a centralized system, were successful, and Qin rose to become a powerful nation in one fell swoop, laying the foundation for the unification of the world by the later Emperor Qin Shi Huang.

中国，戦国秦の王。献公の子。在位，前361‐前338年。当時の秦は諸国から夷狄（いてき）として遇されるほどの後進国であった。英主孝公はこれを屈辱とし，国威を伸張しようと広く天下に人材を求め，これに応じて入秦した公孫鞅(のちの商鞅（しようおう）)を信任して大規模な国政の改革(変法)を断行した。富国強兵と中央集権体制の確立を目ざした改革は功を奏し，秦は一躍して強国にのし上がり，後の始皇帝による天下統一の基礎が築かれた。
