1880‐1936 Chinese soldier and politician. Born in Zhejiang Province. In 1905, he studied at the Shinbu School in Tokyo and joined the China Mengonghui. After returning to China in 1910 (the second year of the Xuantong era), he translated Sakurai Tadaharu's account of his experiences at the Battle of Port Arthur, Nikudan (The Human Bullet). He participated in the Xinhai Revolution and became sworn brothers with Chen Qimei and Chiang Kai-shek. After the failure of the second revolution, he went into exile in Japan. After the Second Sino-Japanese War in 1924, he became acting Prime Minister, Mayor of Shanghai Special Municipality in 1927, and Minister of Foreign Affairs in 1928. From May 1933 to June 1935, he served as chairman of the Executive Yuan's Committee for the Reorganization of Government Affairs in Beiping, playing a buffer role between Japan and China.
