Born: August 28, 1897 in Gemünden
Died: May 3, 1952. Buffalo, New York. Born in Germany, he was one of the pioneers of urban sociology in America. He emigrated to the United States in 1911 and obtained his PhD in sociology from the University of Chicago in 1926. He served as president of the American Sociological Association in 1947 and as the first president of the International Sociological Association from 1949 to 1952. He deepened his research on human ecology to include research on the lifestyles and lifestyle consciousness of urban people, developed the theory of urbanism, and expanded sociology beyond theory into the realm of practical activity. His major works include The Ghetto (1928), Urbanism as a Way of Life (38), and Community Life and Social Policy (56), which was compiled posthumously.
