Vladimir Jankélévitch

Vladimir Jankélévitch

French philosopher and musicologist. Born in Bourges to Russian-Jewish parents, he graduated from the École Normale Supérieure (Ecole Normale Supérieure). He began his studies on Bergson, but earned his doctorate in Schelling. He participated in the Resistance during World War II, and after the war he taught ethics at the University of Toulouse and the University of Lyon, and succeeded René Le Senne (1882-1954) at the University of Paris. He produced many works during that time, and his method can be said to be a "discontinuous dialectic" based on phenomenology, and compared to Hegel's, it is characterized by its positive attempt to evaluate leaps based on instantaneity and intuition. His thought was influenced by Bergson, Schelling, Simmel, Pascal, Kierkegaard, and others, but it is basically a theistic existentialism with a background in Jewish mysticism, and in that sense, although he himself rarely mentions them, his connection with the thought of Heidegger and Marcel should be noted.

Furthermore, his musical theories on Debussy, Ravel, and others are a concrete development of Bachelard's material imagination and offer rich possibilities in terms of musical hermeneutics.
