Yamakoshi [Village] - Yamakoshi

Japanese: 山古志[村] - やまこし
Yamakoshi [Village] - Yamakoshi
A village in Koshi County, central Niigata Prefecture. Population 2,523 (1995). The Uonuma Hills make up most of the village area, and the west borders Nagaoka City and Ojiya City. The village is one of the snowiest in the prefecture, with snow remaining for 150 days. Formerly known as the Twenty Villages of Yamakoshigo, the mountain village has been engaged in rice cultivation, sericulture, and livestock farming in terraced rice fields carved into the mountainside. Farming of Nishikigoi, a local specialty, began in the mid-modern era, and after exhibiting at an exposition held in Tokyo in 1914, it became nationally famous and became the village's main industry. A Nishikigoi farming and fishing cooperative was formed in 1988, and a Nishikigoi center was opened in 1978.
