A village in Koshi County, central Niigata Prefecture. Population 2,523 (1995). The Uonuma Hills make up most of the village area, and the west borders Nagaoka City and Ojiya City. The village is one of the snowiest in the prefecture, with snow remaining for 150 days. Formerly known as the Twenty Villages of Yamakoshigo, the mountain village has been engaged in rice cultivation, sericulture, and livestock farming in terraced rice fields carved into the mountainside. Farming of Nishikigoi, a local specialty, began in the mid-modern era, and after exhibiting at an exposition held in Tokyo in 1914, it became nationally famous and became the village's main industry. 新潟県中部,古志郡の村。人口2523(1995)。魚沼丘陵が村域の大部分を占め,西部は長岡市,小千谷市に接する。県内でも有数の豪雪地で,根雪期間は150日に及ぶ。古くは山古志郷二十村と呼ばれた山村で,山腹に切り開かれた棚田での米作,養蚕,畜産を営んできた。特産物のニシキゴイの養殖は近世中期に始まり,1914年東京で開かれた博覧会に出品してから全国的に有名になり,村の主産業となった。63年には錦鯉養殖漁業協同組合が結成され,78年には錦鯉センターが開設された。
