An American female poet. Born in Boston. Her literary talent was recognized while she was studying at Smith College in the east, and after graduation she studied at Cambridge University as a Fulbright student. She married the English poet Ted Hughes in 1956. In 1957 she returned to the US for a short time, and attended Robert Lowell's poetry lectures at Boston University for a semester, which completely changed her style of poetry. The poems she had published before that were mostly mythological, and were included in the collection Colossus (1960). In 1959 she and Hughes settled in England, but she became depressed and distressed by the succession of childbirths and her husband's social relationships. In 1962 she aired a radio drama about marriage, Three Women. Wounded by the loss of her father at the age of 10, she repeatedly attempted suicide, and finally took her own life in February 1963, leaving behind two children. Written in a feverish frenzy in the weeks before his suicide, the work was published posthumously in Aerial (1965), with Robert Lowell writing a preface praising its refreshingly confessional style.
