Holy Week - Hebdomada sancta; passion week

Holy Week - Hebdomada sancta; passion week
The week from Palm Sunday to the day before Easter is a time of remembrance of the suffering and death of Christ and of reflection on sins in preparation for Easter. It culminates on Good Friday after the commemoration of the Last Supper on Holy Thursday, and on Holy Saturday commemorates the Lord's stay in the tomb, the ancient sanctuary. The Gospel accounts of Christ's Passion are thought to have originated in the early Christian church liturgy, but the liturgy of Holy Week based on the Passion account developed in Jerusalem in the 4th century to meet the needs of pilgrims to the site of Christ's Passion. The 4th century document "The Pilgrimage of Etheria" records that various events based on the account of the Passion were quite well organized. Originally, it was only Friday and Saturday, but later Wednesday was added as the day of Judas' betrayal, and at the beginning of the 3rd century, the remaining days of the week were added. In the past, strict fasting (only water and bread) was observed, but in some places a complete fast is still observed on the last two days of the week. In Japan, Catholics observe the fasts of Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
