Wisdom - Kenchi

Japanese: 顕智 - けんち

1226－1310 A monk from the Kamakura period.
Born in the second year of Karoku. A follower of the Jodo Shinshu sect, he trained at Mount Hiei for ten years. Later, he studied under Shinran's disciple Shinbutsu at Senju-ji Temple in Takada, Shimotsuke (Tochigi Prefecture). He then studied under Shinran and worked to spread the teachings in the eastern provinces and elsewhere. In the second year of Shoka, he succeeded Shinbutsu as the third abbot of Senju-ji Temple. After Shinran's death, he worked with Kakushinni and others to build the Otani Mausoleum in Kyoto. He passed away on July 4, the third year of Enkei. He was 85 years old. His Buddhist name was Hajime Kenjun.

嘉禄(かろく)2年生まれ。浄土真宗。比叡(ひえい)山で10年修行。のち下野(しもつけ)(栃木県)高田の専修(せんじゅ)寺で親鸞(しんらん)の弟子の真仏にまなぶ。ついで親鸞に師事,東国などで布教につとめる。正嘉(しょうか)2年真仏の跡をつぎ,専修寺3世となる。親鸞の没後,覚信尼らと京都の大谷廟堂造営につくした。延慶(えんきょう)3年7月4日死去。85歳。法名ははじめ賢順。
