...If we take the latter view, it is thought that this road was in line with the Sandai Jitsuroku and opened a short route to the Tohoku region before the expedition of the Emishi, but there are no reliable records of people passing through here after the Nara period, and it would have been impossible to maintain the coastal road in the V-shaped valley, so it was hardly used. Kiso no Kakehashi (currently Agematsu Town, Kiso County, Nagano Prefecture) is also famous for its utamakura, but it is said to have been located at Kamisaka Pass in the Heian period. [Early Modern Period]
The Kiso Road was a highway along the Nakasendo road, a main road in the Edo period connecting Edo and Kyoto, stretching 23 ri (approximately 90 km) from Sakurazawa in the Matsumoto district in the north of the Kiso Valley to Jyugakutoge Pass in the Mino district in the south.

...This refers to the Kintai Bridge in Iwakuni (Yamaguchi Prefecture), Saruhashi in Kai (Yamanashi Prefecture), and Aimoto Bridge in Kurobe (Toyama Prefecture), which have been cited as being particularly structurally unusual among Japan's old bridges. Some say that Kiso's Kakehashi or Iya's Kazurahashi (Tokushima Prefecture) should be substituted for Aimoto Bridge, but Kakehashi is a bridge made of planks stretched along steep cliffs, and structurally it is not as distinctive as the bridges mentioned above. Kintai Bridge is an elegant bridge made mainly of wooden arches that was built in 1673 (Enpo 1), and Saruhashi is a drawbridge that must have been built at least before the 13th century.

…日本の古橋の中でとくに構造的に変わったものとしてあげられてきた岩国(山口県)の錦帯橋，甲斐(山梨県)の猿橋，黒部(富山県)の愛本橋をいう。愛本橋の代りに木曾の桟（かけはし）あるいは祖谷（いや）(徳島県)のかずら橋を入れる説もあるが，桟はけわしい崖に沿って板をかけ渡した橋で，構造的には上述の諸橋ほどの特色はない。錦帯橋は1673年(延宝1)に創建された木造アーチを主体とする優美な橋，猿橋は少なくとも13世紀以前にはつくられていたに違いないはね木橋である。…
