The name of the shamisen tuning. The first and second strings are tuned a perfect fifth, and the second and third strings are tuned a perfect fourth. Usually, the second string of the hon-choshi is tuned up a whole tone, and the first string of the san-sagari is tuned down a whole tone, which is called te-ni-agari. The third string of the ni-agari is tuned up a whole tone, while the first string is tuned up a whole tone, which is called san-agari. The first string is tuned up a whole tone, which is called taka-hon-choshi, and the second string is tuned up a whole tone again, which is called taka-ni-agari. When changing from hon-choshi to ni-agari in the middle of a performance, the position of the tonic note rises by a fifth, creating a showy feeling. When playing with the koto, the hi-choshi tuning is often used, and the first string is tuned to the first string, and the ensemble is played with the koto tuned to hi-choshi.
