Garden making record - Saiteiki

Japanese:
Garden making record - Saiteiki

This book on gardening methodology from the mid-Heian period is the oldest book of garden secrets in the world. It consists of one volume. It is also called "Senzai Hisho" and "Sonoike Hisho." It describes in detail how to handle the topography of Shinden-zukuri gardens, as well as the design and techniques of standing stones, and has had a huge impact on the development of Japanese gardens. The oldest surviving copy is the "Tanimura family copy," which is thought to have been handed down to the Maeda family. In the "Gunsho Rui Juhon," it is written, "From the first volume onwards, the original handwritten version by Kyogoku-dono has been copied without a single character," so it was believed to have been written by Gokyogoku Yoshitsune, but recent research has suggested that it was written by Tachibana Toshitsuna (1028-94), who was Shuri-no-daibu (chief of the Fushimi Shuri). Since the Kamakura period, this style has been passed down to the Northern Fujiwara clan and has been considered the mainstream of garden design. Therefore, people of this school are called the "Sakutei-ryu" school.
