This shrine was built by Japan on Koror Island in the Palau Islands of Micronesia. In 1919, the Treaty of Versailles placed the former German South Seas Islands under Japanese mandate. As the inhabitants of Micronesia were under the influence of Christianity, the Japanese government did not initially force Japanization out of consideration for the League of Nations. However, after Japan withdrew from the League of Nations in 1933, Japanese influence began to be strengthened, and plans were made to build a shrine as the general guardian deity of the South Seas Islands. On November 1, 1940, the main building of the Kanpei Taisha Nanyo Shrine, dedicated to Amaterasu Omikami, was completed on Armis Hill on Koror Island, where the South Seas Agency was located, and a dedication ceremony was held.
