A general term for the succulent genus Sedum, Crassulaceae. Approximately 500 species are known in the temperate and subtropical zones of the Northern Hemisphere. In Japan, the red-flowered Sedum, the yellow-flowered Sedum, and the stonecrop are found. The first two groups have underground rhizomes, and the above-ground parts usually die in winter. On the other hand, the stonecrop family does not have thick underground stems, is evergreen in winter, has small leaves, and is excellent as a ground cover plant. It is often used as a garden plant because there are many species that are beautiful, cold-resistant, sturdy, and easy to grow. Mexican stonecrop, which has four whorled leaves, has become particularly popular in recent years. On the other hand, Taitogome, which has alternate rice-grain-shaped leaves, grows wild on the coasts of the Kanto region and west, and is highly cold-resistant. It prefers sunny environments, many of which are drought-resistant, and can be easily propagated by cuttings.
